achy hip

Question
I am a 41 yr old, (5'10, 150) who has run for exercise off & on since middle school. I've always found a lot of satisfaction in running. Since I returned to working full-time, I haven't been exercising consistently. Recently, I decided to go back to running. I found that condition-wise, I was very comfortable. Over the last two-three weeks, I've worked my way back to an average 2-3 mile run two or three times a week. I do a 45 min. exercise video a couple of days opposite running, and find that I "have" to rest a day or two to recuperate (getting old isn't much fun!)Recently, my right hip has become very achy. When I run, I feel pain in the hip/joint area. The pain rises & falls while running, but never completely subsides, nor does it get sharp/severe. After running, I stretch my hamstrings & hip flexors thoroughly. The hip ache remains with me, including discomfort while trying to sleep and stiffness/extra soreness in the AM. I'm concerned about "running through the pain" and causing a greater problem. But my number one concern is that this will kill my motivation to get out there & keep running!
What might be causing the pain and what approach can I take to address the problem(s)?

Answer
Hi Patrece
What your experiencing is typical starting up when you start asking your body to do things that it hasn't do for a while. You have to get back to basics of building your body back up.Most all problems runners have are directly related to alignment and tracking and trying to come back to fast. What i recommend is getting into a good overall weight program head to toe. Also a good core workout and some stationary biking for tracking. There is not one thing that is causing your situation. It is many things that are weak along with many imbalances that have to be corrected. It is not fun but neccessary for the long haul, but worth it in my opion..The most important thing as you move forward is a great deal of patience and a consistent work ethic. If you have other questions just get in touch Patrece. You can call me if you wish.

All the very best
