pain in both knees

hi,started running 6 weeks ago and everything was fine,then went and did a 6 miler, normally do 3,next day could hardly walk with pain in both knees on the inside of the joint,iced it and took pain killers and didn't run for 6 days when felt all right,did just a 3 miler and felt ok.now its a dull aching pain all of the time,but have ran on it and seems ok for a day or so.
        any advice would be appreciated

Terry, I'm sorry to hear of your pain.  Basically you inflamed your knee and now it is still inflamed a little.  We call this the subacute stage.  Anyway, what you need to know is that one of two things will help.  First, another 2 weeks of rest and ice will likely get rid of the dull ache. You don't want to do that though and it doesn't mean that next time you try to increase your mileage it won't happen again.  The second thing that will help and the one I suggest because I've seen it fix many problems long term is to change your foot strike.  This Harvard site http://barefootrunning.fas.harvard.edu/ illustrates different foot strikes you can try. I suggest the fore-foot strike. It is demonstrated even better on youtube.com. Search there for "Barefoot Running Professor".  Two keys to remember for changing foot strike are essential to know. First, start slow and short.  Different foot strike techniques can really cure pain in the ankle, knee, and hip, but they cause other muscles to be sore early on so start slow and don't run very long.  Second, you don't need to run barefoot even if the foot strike is demonstrated barefoot.  Wearing shoes is just fine.  

Ice your knee after you run and again another time in the day and play with different foot strikes.  It takes practice, but it will fix your knee pain long term.  Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!
