Ankle Pain

Question
I have been experiencing ankle pain on the outside up my leg a little. It feels like I rolled my ankle but don't remember doing it.  Last night I ran 6 miles and on the last half mile had to stop for a minute because the pain moved to the inside of my ankle and I could hardly walk.  The pain faded and I continued to run the last half mile.  I iced it and could barely put any weight on it.  I thought I would have to walk on crutches the next day.  After I got up and walked around a bit, the ankle is still sensitive but i can actually walk on it. I am training for a half marathan and run about 25 miles a week. Any ideas what this could be.  It doesn't hurt all the time but I can tell that it is sensitive and when I turn my ankle in a circular motion there is a slight pain.

Answer
Hi Anna
You are experiencing some tracking and alignment situations. It is a very normal problem with runners especially individuals just starting out and upping the training. The best course of action now and in the future of your training is to incorporate some training with up right stationary bike workouts to maintain stability of muscular skeleton alignment. You will never interrupt your training for an event because any thing you do running you can do on the bike.Based on your schedule you just go by time.Example is if you are doing a long run for your half marathon of 2hrs. then you do a bike for two hrs, which is the same for tempo's and speed work.I have used this situation for many years with clients including a number of world class athletes that i have advised over the years. If you have any questions just get in touch and if you want more clarity real time you can call me here in Albuquerque NM anytime no charge.Just go to my site for contact info.

All the best
