Knee Pain after running

Question
Hello
I am Vish and am 28 years old weighing 214 pounds with a height of 6"2. I wanted to bring down my weight and since it is summer started running outside for the past 2 weeks. To be truthful, i run very slowly and i generally do a 5 min run 1 min walk for 72-73 mins now. Initially started with 2 miles and now I am on the 5 mile mark. For the past 3 days I have been experiencing knee pain when I walk down or climb the stairs. When I walk I dont have the pain. When I sleep if i turn my leg fast I feel the pain. Is it my shoes? Do you think those bare foot shoes like vibram will help? Is this normal or do i have to consult a physio? Please advice.

Answer
Hi Vish
It is not your shoes and no need to see a doctor.Your body will adapt over time. You just have be patient. The knee issue is possibly a slight case of chondromalacia which is basically a tracking and alignment situation. The main discomfort would be in and around the knee cap. What i would recommend is some up right stationary bike workouts with med tension increasing it as you become stronger at high rev 65 to 90 rpm.I would do them as often as you can till the discomfort is not there, but also add some biking to complement your running and keeping you tracking alignment in check.I would not use vibram. You need a little more support right now.It is going to take time so don't rush it.Your body will adapt gradually.

All the best

John
