My first marathon

Question
Hi Ryan, I am interested and my goal is to run my first half marathon by Nov/08 in Big Sur, CA. Is there a book i should read to learn about what to eat and how much to start running? I go often to the gym and do cardio (walking/spinning) but the max i had run was 10 minutes and im tired. I have to also loose 50lbs; do you think i can make it with dedication on my own? Thanks

Answer
Cynthia,

Is it possible? Of course. It takes some work, but anything does. If you are self motivated, then you should be okay on your own. If not, you porbably need a coach. Start by building a base of long slow running. Don't run for distance, run for time. Start by running 10 minutes everyday. After a week, try to run 12, then 15. Slowly build to where you are running 30-40 minutes every day. After this, we can start doing some harder training. As you get in shape, you will run farther, the more you run, the more weight you will lose. It is circular. If you decide you need a coach, I can help you at www.runningfocus.com
