jogging vs. walking

Question
Hi Rick, I am wanting to lose weight before my vacation in Aug.  I used to run several years ago, but after running a while my shins hurt.  Was I doing something wrong?  Also is there a big difference in the way you lose weight, tone and tighten your body by running or walking? I want to lose weight safely but kind of fast. Do you prefer walking or jogging? Why?  Thanks!

Answer
If you haven't ran in years, and just went into it, you're bound to have some stress on the shins.  A jogging/walking alternation is recommended to 'break back into' the rhythm of running continously. Running will burn more calories/minute than walking will, and I believe it burns more fat calories as well. High intensity intervals, such as jogging for 30-60 seconds, followed by walking for 2-3 minutes, and repeating those types of efforts through your workout will give you better results.  Why? Because research shows that high intensity interval workouts will burn more body fat than regular, steady-state exercise.
