Running Pace for 55-Year-Olds: Average Mile Time & Race Strategies

Question
Hi Mr. Dehart:
I'm 55, been given a clean bill of health and just started casual running a couple of years ago. I can do a mile in 9 minutes. Would that be poor, average or very good for a 55 year old? Also, do people who run those 2, 5, and 10 mile races typically rest along the way or do they run continuously until the finish?

Thanks

Answer
dear terrence
There are no stats that i know of to rate your effort except age group records.Based on what i see you really probably do not have to many 55 year olds who could do it.I do know of many 50 year olds who can rum five minute pace for 5 and 10k races and a 73 year old who four weeks a go ran 26.2 miles at 6.40 per mile 254.45 full marathon in canada and no they run all the way.Ther is also a man from the uk who at age 93 ran the berlin marathon last sept in 5hr 40 minutes and you do the math.
Terrence you are a young man and have many miles to go.I do phone coaching all over the country and parts of the world if your ever interested in identifing with your true potential.....You can get age group info by going to www.usmastersnews.com. hope this helps terrence.

The very best to you         Ps keep up the good work
John
