Identifying Vintage Metal Goggles: History, Purpose & Uses

I saw the movie Death Hunt ( based in the cold Yukon). One of the actors wore a pair metal goggles with what appeared to be slices in the metal, they look very similar to the ones wore by the man in this picture.

Can you please tell me what these type of goggles are called and what their main purpose is?

I'm affraid I've never seen or heard of these before.  I would assume though that they are for very bright situations similar to what you would find on a mountain when the sun's light reflects off of the snow.  I would think that this type of lens would only let enough light through to allow the user to see enough to function.  Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.
