Economic & Environmental Impacts of Rock Climbing in England: A Student's Guide

Question
I am a student studying A level geography at college and for a piece of coursework i need to investigate the economic and environmental impacts of rock climbing. I would be very grateful if you could give me information on the economic and environmental impacts of rock climbing particularly in England as I live in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Thankyou. Jeremy Platt

Answer
Dear Jeremy, I would love to climb in England, but, alas, have yet to do so.  Accordingly, I could not comment directly on your situation, but I can comment in general:

(1) Climbers have a positive impact on a number of North American resort communities---Canmore, Alberta, Squamish, BC, Yosemite Valley, Estes Park, CO, Jackson, WYO, North Conway, NH.  You may contact the respective chambers of commerce by e-mail to ask them about any measured impacts.
(2) Environmentally, climbers impact erosion through making improvised trails; they impact water quality with human waste; and they impact environmental aesthetics by installing bolts, leaving slings, and chalk use.

Good Luck---If you need more....just ask.
