Sand Mountain: Location & Geological Significance in Alabama & Georgia

Sand Mountain is a sandstone ridge located primarily in the US states of Alabama and Georgia, with a small section extending into Tennessee. It is approximately 200 miles long and 60 miles wide, and stretches from the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee southwestward to the Coosa Valley in Alabama. The eastern edge of the ridge forms a distinctive geologic boundary in Alabama's Lookout Mountain region.
