Question
Al,
I am 6 .5 inch, and supposed to be 6 foot 2 at least.  I am a freshman in high school with some rowing experience.  My current 1k, (This is like my 5th 1K) is a 3:40.  Do I have the potential to be a really good rower?

Secondly, will a 4.6 weighted GPA (about 4.0 unweighted) with a very good erg time and many AP classes get me into Harvard? I am a legacy.

Answer
Hi John: It is an average time for a freshman heavyweight rower.  A 1K of 3:30 or better would be considered a good time.  Try a 2K piece, as this is the acid test for competitive rowing.

As for going to Harvard, your grades and legacy definitely work in your favor.  You also have to factor in your SAT score.  The rowing will work in your favor; but unless you have an incrdible erg time, coaches will want to see your on-water race record.

To answer your question, with your height and starting out at such a young age, you definitely have potential to be a successful rower.

Good Luck/AP
