Grad school rowing

Question
I rowed for 3 years for a college club team that wasn't part of the NCAA starting in 2003. Then left school to work before I graduated. I am going back spring semester 2011 and will graduate fall 2012. I then plan to go to grad school and would like to row for the NCAA while doing so but I don't know if that is possible due to eligibility rules. Is that possible or do I have to find a club team to compete?

Answer
Matt: I don't think you have any eligibility left.  Once you are a freshman, you have five years (or ten semesters) to complete your athletic eligibility.  The clock starts once you enter school, not when you start competing.

You may wish to consult with your college's athletics director to determine exactly how many seasons of varsity competition you may have used. Or you can contact the NCAA membership services staff at 317/917-6222 if you want a second opinion.

Of course you can row at the club level any time.  I actually competed as a member of the Jacksonville University crew (even though I had graduated college years earlier and was not even attending the school).  The remaining crewmembers and coxswain needed me as a spare oar, so the coach competed as a member of a local Jacksonville Rowing Club run by the coach's father.

Good Luck/AP
