Question
I'm 17 and a junior in high school.  My grades and ACT are above average.  I'm 5'7" and weigh 145.  I started rowing last spring and am on a pretty competitive high school team.  My 2K erg time over the winter was 7:44.  I row year round and think I can bring that time down.  What time would I need to get college scholarship money from a D-I school - not an Ivy League school, but not a really small school either.

Answer
Hi Wanda: I'd say you need a total package to be a serious candidate for an athletic scholarship for crew.  Your erg time is well above average.  A time of 7:37 would put you in the Top-25%.  But you also need to have a lot of on-water race experience, and most importantly, excellent grades.

Schools want to see that you can handle the rigors of academics and maintaining an academic workload.  But overall, I'd say you have a good chance if you pick the right school.

Good Luck/AP
