rowing question

Question
Hi Al--I row for a local club and my school district does not offer a rowing team so I was wondering if I wanted to row at a scholastic event in my single can I register unaffiliated for example--to row at Stoksbury? Please advise.

Answer
Hi Again, Marissa: Interesting question.  Every regatta has different entry rules; however, I am almost certain that for a spring high school rowing event, you must have affiliation to a High School.  And that would certainly be the case for an event as prestigious as the Stotesbury Cup.

That said, maybe your high school would let you represent them if you were just going in as a single sculler entry.  There might be some issue with insurance liability, etc.  The best thing you can do is have your mom or dad talk to your school's principal or athletic director in allowing the school to have you represent them in their "crew team."

The other thing you should do is have one of your parents or the school contact the specific event on eligibility rules in your situation.  Below is what I found on the Stotesbury Cup:

All competitors in a boat must represent the same high school. Each school must submit a team roster, signed by the school principal or athletic director, listing the names of all eligible athletes. The team roster is generated by Regatta Central when you register. See the Registration page for details. ( http://www.boathouserow.org/rega10/stotesburyregistration.html )

Good Luck/AP
