Possibility of college rowing

Question
Hi, I am currently a junior in high school, 6'3 and weigh 180 lbs. My  2k score at the end of last year was 6:55 and intend to bring it into the 6:45 and hopefully lower range by the end of this year.  i also just today rowed a max watt output test and had an average of 672 watts if that means anything to you. I was just wondering whether you think with my body and scores that it could translate into a chance of rowing in college. I have had a good amount of experience on the water and would love to continue to row in college.

Answer
Hi James: Your erg time is very good.  I don't know what your level of success is, but it seems like you would be an excellent addition to any college crew program.

College crew is one of the few sports that actively recruits students, even those with no previous experience.  I joined crew as a newbie when I was a sophomore.  I assure you, you will have no problem joining your college crew and maybe even making the freshman boat without a scholarship.

If you are seeking a scholarship, you'll need to write to your coach and introduce yourself, discuss your rowing experience and detail your erg scores and races.

With respect to your body type, I'd only suggest might want to fill out your frame a bit.  6-3"/180 seems a bit on the thin side. If you are not doing so, develop a weight training program that emphasizes gaining muscle and bulk (i.e., heavier weights with less repetitions).  You also might want to increase your calorie intake a bit by eating high-protein foods like lean meats and low-fat milk.

Good Luck/AP
