Tympanic repair and diving

Question
Hi, I am 63. Several years ago I had a repair (graft) to my badly perforated eardrum. It was successful but I have been told that I can't ever try scuba diving which I have always wanted to try. I love swimming and used to love water sports, is there any way this would be possible. Thank you

Answer
Hi Caroline.  It may be possible but since I am not a doctor I cannot give any medical advice.  One of the things you can do is to go to a dive shop and let them know your interests.  They will give you a form that will require a doctor to sign off on before you would be allowed to train or participate in scuba activities.  Be sure to let your doctor know about the ear issue so he can help you make an honest assessment. I hope this works out for you and thanks for being concerned about your health before diving.
