Repairing a Broken Air Tank Valve Insert: A Mechanic's Guide

hi i went to change the insert on my tank vaulve that alows for a clamp fittings the alen key part had broken so i drilled a hole and inserted a easyout and used a air gun to try to take out the insert [i am a mercanic] this did not work so i drilled out to just before the threads on the houesing i used some relesing oil and with the corect size tap i removed what was left of the insert i have now been told that i should not use oil in that area as the heat from the air presher could start a fire is thi true if so what can i do to clean the area that has oil on  many thanks barry

By insert I am assuming your have a DIN valve and the insert you removed was to allow for a SCUBA yoke connection.

You can take it to a shop and ask for it to be O2 cleaned or remove it from your cylinder and break it down completely.

If you have access to an ultrasonic cleaner (if not a toothbrush and a clean bowl) completely immerse the parts in a solution of simple green crystal and water, clean, then rinse completely with fresh water.
