Answer
I was once told that, "the business of diving is not diving." Meaning that those looking to make a living or to profit from diving face the same world business marketplace as any other occupation. Each year, millions of prospective employees enter the work force looking for careers or jobs for which they've been educated or trained. Because many career fields are saturated with job seekers those looking for employment are often frustrated by their inability to attain employment. Many find jobs in other fields or find creative ways to become hired or create their own employment. The diving industry is a career field that is often saturated with prospective employees, many of whom are struggling to fill poor paying positions at resorts, on boats or with dive centers. Why? Because we are brainwashed into thinking that diving jobs are related to training. Dive centers and resorts are looking to staff instructors in most cases. Certified instructors can teach courses and act as dive leaders and sales people. By hiring an instructor, a traditional operator is able to get more from an employee for the pay. If I'm correct, a CMAS 2 Star Diver is equivalent to a Rescue Diver with most agencies or maybe even a Dive Leader. If you're equivalent to a divemaster then you have a better chance of finding employment. But, if not your chances of getting hired to work at a resort are lessened. Believe it or not, there are many jobs out there for divers at all levels. The problem is the pay is universally poor. Many divers turn to creative self-employment to earn money. Some, such as those who recover golf balls in the water hazards of golf courses, make a surprisingly good living by having used business sense and "street smarts" for entrepreneurial gain. If you have excellent mechanical skills or are great at selling, it is possible to obtain employment at dive centers, resorts or charter boats. Many dive boats that visit cold deep wreck sites employ mates to anchor into the sites by "setting the hook" and pulling it free of the wreck at the end. Often such jobs find the mate working for tips rather than an hourly wage or salary. To find a job, ask yourself, "What are my skills and abilities?" "What jobs have I worked in the past?" "Are they related to jobs that may exist in diving?" Once you figure out how you are useful to employers seek them out and try to market and sell yourself. If you can afford additional training, you may want to look into becoming a SCUBA diving instructor or a commercial diver. Having these certifications won't guarantee you a job, but they will help. If you are looking for jobs with resorts, resort owners and managers are looking for instructors and divemasters who are also boat captains or diesel mechanics, photo pros, those who speak several languages, or those who have business and office skills, lots of mechanical ability, or those who can entertain. Commercial diving companies are looking for divers who are experienced trades people. It's easier to teach a great mechanic or technically skilled person to dive than it is to make a diver into a skilled mechanic. If you're not an instructor or commercial diver, trying your hand at entrepreneurial businesses such as hull cleaning or golf ball recovery may find you earning some money. Many divers are employed in other careers and use diving to earn some additional funds -- often to pay for diving! Use the Internet to research anything that interests you from working at a camp that teaches kids to dive to working in NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Lab, from working at a local dive center to working for a diving equipment manufacturer. There are jobs out there for those who are creative, persistent and willing to work. Good luck!
