Question
Hi, I have been wanting to purchase an assault rifle for a while now, and have been able to get up to $1300 for one, I'm going to a gun show in 2 weeks & I'm not sure what to get. I have narrowed it down to 3 types AR15 or M4, GALIL, or AK47, I love the look of the ar15's but the galil is pretty sharp too, the ar's are a lot more pricey than the galils or AK's but they are nice rifles. So I would like to know what would you think would be the best to purchase for target shooting, rec shooting, & Personal defense? Thanks for your time I anticipate your answer.

Answer
If you intend to do any formal target shooting only the AR-type would be allowed. Get a 20" barrel with match sights.
It can be accurate at 600 yards with open match sights.

The other two would not be allowed in matches.
The AR-s can be used service rifle matches and some high power rifle
matches.

AK types are crudely made and not real accurate.
The tolerances are so loose they rattle if shake then.
The designed to simply work and not need much training to operate.

Galil also has loose tolerances but is a well made rifle.
It has to operate in desert conditions.

Both the AK & Galil were designed to be primarily a full auto or burst rifle. The AR was designed primarily as semi-auto rifle that could fire full auto.

In terms of self defense I recommend NO centerfire rifle.
Even the .233 Remington can over penetrate and go through walls.
Thus, can easily hurt an innocent bystander.
Get a 12 gauge pump shotgun with buckshot.
