gun for dad

2016/7/22 9:17:44

Question
I dont know if you could answer this or even be of any help but im taking a shot at this. Im 20 years old and my dad always speaks of my grandfather who i wasnt able meet due to his death when my dad was a child. I do know that my grandfather worked at savage and built savage rifles in massachusetts right after he got out of WW2. His honorable separation date was 10-4-1947. Dad said that he would have to stamp his initials somewhere descrete on the barrel just so that if something was wrong with the gun when it was finished they would know "who done it". Im trying to track down one of those guns with my grandfathers initials on it "EHD". His full name was Emmett Hazen Dennis. I guess my question would be...would you have any advice on how i could track one of those guns down. How would i go about doing that. Im not worried about cost or conveniance or anything. I just want one of those guns built by my grandfather with his initials on it. If you could get the word out or advise me on how to do that i would be so grateful. Thank you. ~Kelly

Answer
Kelly,

Very interesting story. I can certainly understand your desire to try to locate one of these firearms.

It is rather difficult to run down history on many/most older Savage/Stevens guns in general. Savage Arms no longer provides historical information on older firearms.

However....... There is a Savage Firearms historian that may be able to help you. His name is John Callahan and he is a Savage independent historian (NOT working for Savage).

You will need to write him at : John Callahan
                               53 Quarry Rd.
                               Westfield MA. 01085

Include your name, all contact info, and explain what you are trying to locate. I am not certain if he will be able to provide you what you are looking for but its worth a try.

Good luck and thanks for the question Kelly.

Sid Lark

Kelly,

Have you had the opportunity to follow up on this via U.S. Mail with Mr. Callahan and if so were you able to obtain the info that you desire? Just wondering how that worked out for you.
