Projectile range

Question
Can you tell me the difference in range of a 41/2 " barrel and a 6" barrel on a 22 automatic pistol. Or what is difference between the two. I am thinking about a Ruger auto and would like to know. Thank you very much. James

Answer
James,

As far as the effective range associated with the 2 different barrel lengths, it is probably negligible.  You are only talking about 1.5 inches.  In a .22 caliber, it will not make a significant difference.  The additional barrel length will allow for additional rotational stability of the bullet, but again, for most purposes, it will not be significant.  If you are planning on using the gun for competitive target shooting, I'd go with the longer barrel to gain whatever incremental advantage you can.  If you are going to use it for recreational shooting (plinking) then it is up to your personal preference.  It will be much easier to find a holster for the shorter gun.

Hope this helps...

Doug
