Savage 308 firing pin

2016/7/22 9:18:51

Question
My name is Jake, I have always hunted with my Savage 308 (Model 1895) lever action.  It has always been a great gun that I often bragged about, Yet recently it began to mis-fire.  Can you suggest a solution and where I might find a firing pin and spring if needed?  Thanks

Answer
Jake,

Sorry to hear about your mis-firing problem.  I'm guessing you've already tried the manufacturer's website and have been unable to get info on parts from them.  If not, check http://www.savagearms.com/cs_home.htm
That is their customer service page...you can also give them a call at (413) 568-7001.

If you don't have any luck with them, try Brownells.  Their website is:
http://www.brownells.com
They have an amazing variety of parts for virtually every firearm out there.

If you are not completely sure about the problem, I'd suggest a couple of things...
1.  Gunk on the spring might be slowing it down if it hasn't been cleaned or lightly lubricated in a while.
2.  If this is a recent development, is the behavior consistent across multiple brands of ammo.  Some lots of ammo have hard primers that could cause occasion misfires if your firing pin is a little 'tired'.
3.  Also, are you sure you are getting a good 'lock up' on the chamber when you close the lever?  If you are not, the rifle might be 'slightly' out of battery resulting in a 'click' instead of a 'bang'when you pull the trigger.

If you don't have a lot of rounds through the gun (500 plus), I'd try looking at the things above before changing out the firing pin and spring.

Also...if I am telling you things you have already tried, please forgive me as I don't know how familiar you are with firearms maintenance.  I am just providing some suggestions that you can consider.

Hope some of this helps...

Best regards,

Doug
