Question
I have a double barrel side by side shotgun with double hammers the right hammer is missing as well as the forestock modest engraving and the only verbage engraved is H&D Folsom arms company no gauge size it appears to be a 12 gauge.the gun contains some rust and some pitting in the barrels any idea on value or if it is worth restoring?

Answer
Hello Bart,

The H&D Folsom Arms Co was a large distributor of both double and single barrel shotguns that were produced by Crescent Firearms Co. of Norwich, Connecticut.

Folsom owned and later sold to Savage Arms Co. the Crescent Firearms Co. Davis-Warner Co. and Baker Gun Co. around 1930.

There are dozens of Crescent double barrel SXS that were manufactured with as many listed values. However under "Folsom Arms" I only list three, the models No. ) Armory-Hammer Sidelock. The No.2-Hammer Sidelock, and the No. 3-Damascus Barrel.

The average retail values in "good" condition (which I do not believe yours qualifies as) are as follows:

No. O...... $350
No. 2-Hammer Sidelock...... $300
No. 3-Damascus Barrel.......$425

Knock off about $75 on each if in "fair" condition and another $75 or so if in "poor" condition.

I guess "worth restoring" is a question that you are probably in a better position to answer (based upon the info that I've provided) than I am.

For one thing, a restored "older" gun is seldom if ever worth as much as one in original condition. However sometimes original condition may not be "operable" condition so fixing is needed.

If you really like the gun and want to keep it (do not plan on shooting a Damascus barrel gun) for whatever reason, I guess it may be worth restoring since it is for your enjoyment and not for re-sale purposes.

Thanks for the question Bart and have a Happy New Year !
