Essex 12 gauge

Question
I have an ESSEX gun works 12 gauge shot gun (single barrel).  Barrel is 32" long. It has been in my family for about 100 years.

There is a six digit number underneath (near trigger).  130570

Very good shape. HOW CAN I FIND OUT HOW OLD IT IS?
Does it have any value?

Answer
Hello Randy.
Your Essex 12 gauge single barrel shotgun was manufactured by Crescent Firearms Co. around the 1920's. It is one of about 100 models manufactured by them. These were basically the same shotgun, with only the name changed. These were known as 'house guns' and were special ordered by hardware stores, catalogue and mail order companies, etc.
There is no real collector value on these type shotguns. They are valued from $50-$100, depending on condition. If it has been in your family for many years, I would find a prominent spot on the wall and lay it to rest.
Thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
