Best Revolvers for Beginners Under $550: .357, .38 Special, .22LR & .22 Magnum

Question
I'm trying to decided on what kind of revolver to get. I'm a first time buyer on a bit of a budget around $550. What are a few good, reliable revolvers that are .357/.38special or .22lr, or .22mag for my budget?

Answer
Since autos have taken over the gun market, there aren't a lot of choices in revolvers today in terms of large production and mfg's that will be around to stand behind their product.

The undisputed king is Smith & Wesson, and you *may* be able to find a used gun in that price range.

A very strong and slightly cheaper alternative would be the Rugers, particularly in the used market.

A budget alternative is Taurus, which are a close (external) copy of the Smiths. In my experience they are not as robust and will not stand up to the repeated firing that a S&W will, but they do have a life-time warranty and they will fix whatever breaks on them.

As you don't say what the gun will be used for, I cannot comment on barrel length or caliber. However, be aware that while you can shoot .38 Special out of a gun chambered in .357 Mag, you CANNOT shoot .22LR out of a gun chambered in .22 Mag.
