Ammunition

Question
I have a Harrington Richardson Arms Co. 38 Revolver. I am trying to find a place to purchase ammunition for it. On the side of the barrel it has 38 S.&W.CTGE. I've inherited it from my Dad and would like to know more about it.Thanks

Answer
Joie,

You didn't tell me the model number but it sounds like you have either an American Double Action or a Safety Hammer Double Action revolver from H&R.  The American was made between 1883 and 1941.  The Safety Hammer was made between 1887 and 1941.  Depending on the age of the gun, it might not be safe to shoot.  You should probably have a gunsmith take a look at it.  The older version of the gun were not designed to withstand the pressures of modern ammunition.

The caliber you reference is .38 Smith and Wesson ammo is VERY difficult to find.  It is basically a 'discontinued' caliber since no guns have been made that shoot that caliber in probably 40 years.  You would have to find someone that happened to have some still in stock.  None of the major online ammo vendors have it.

I found some listed at the following website called Old West Scrounger but don't know if he actually has it.  It was also kind of pricey at $35 for a box of 50 rounds.

You might just want to keep it as a keepsake...I have an old Colt Police Positive First Issue that I have in a display case in my office...it is quite the conversation starter.

Anyway, hope this helps you out.

Best regards,

Doug Little
