Shooting Modern Ammunition in Vintage Shotguns: Safety & Compatibility
Question
Dear Sir,
I have an old Meriden 12 gauge SxS. The barrels are marked "armory steel". I don't believe they are damascus steel as i can see no visible twist in the barrels. I was wondering if it is OK to shoot modern ammunition in this gun? I would absolutely love to dust her off this coming fall. Thank you.
Marc
Answer
Hi Marc,
Unfortunately I am unable to visually inspect the gun to determine if it is safe to shoot modern ammo. Due to civil liability, you would need to carry the gun to a local gunsmith and have them make that determination for you. Armory Steel can handle light loads of modern ammo under the right circumstance(s).
Best of luck!
