found gun

Question
QUESTION: Hello, My father died in the mid 80's. We recently went through some of his old stuff im the attic and found a gun of his. My mom thinks he bought the gun off an individual in the early 70's or maybe even a trade.
I am sure the gun is not registered and I guess it could even be stolen. How can I make this all legal?  Thanks for your time.

ANSWER: Jackson,

It really depends on where you live.  In most states there is no requirement for registration of handguns.  If your Dad bought the gun from a private individual in states that permit face to face transfers, the purchase was entirely legal.

If you can tell me your state of residence, I can help you with more specifics.  Depending on where you live it may not be necessary for you to do anything at all..

Best regards,

QUESTION: Thanks Doug,   I live in Tennessee.
I just want to be sure....for instance: if I get pulled over and I tell the officer I have a gun will he not check to see if it is registered in my name as well as a carry permit?  Thanks

Answer
Jackson,

As long as you are simply transporting the gun you are fine.  There is no registration in Tennessee.  As far as transporting the gun, it can be unloaded and in plain view anywhere in the vehicle.  It can also be in a gun case.

Hope this helps you out...
