Can a 9mm luger bullet be fired by a rifle? If so, would you please provide me with a source to cite to re: this information. Thank you very much!

No, not by a true rifle, but by a pistol caliber carbine, requiring a dedicated barrel and magazine.

Colt M4s have been so configured (http://www.colt.com/mil/SMG.asp), and of course there is the very famous H&K MP5 subgun.

Ruger made a pistol caliber carbine (the PC9) about the year 2000, but I don't believe it is produced any longer.

Usually a distinction is made between true rifles (starting at a .243 Win. and going up to .50 BMG), intermediate cartridges (not really true rifle cartridges - these would be such cartridges as the 5.56 NATO that the M16 is chambered in, or the 7.62 x 39 that the AK 47 is chambered in).

Pistol caliber carbines have very limited usefulness. Handgun cartridges are very weak, and it is best to think of pistol-caliber carbines as a pistol on steroids, not as a true rifle.
