transfer/registration

Question
I am trying to buy a gun from a private owner in GA, i live in FL. How do I transfer registration from him to me?

Answer
Joshua,

It's pretty simply actually.  You need to have the seller locate a gun dealer that holds a Federal Firearms License that is willing to process the transaction.  You need to find a gun dealer near you that is an FFL holder that is willing to receive the firearm for you.  The seller will deliver the gun to the FFL holder on his end, who will ship it to the FFL holder on your end.  The one on your end will process the appropriate paperwork (ATF 4473 form) and release the firearm to based on whatever the local requirements are for waiting period, background checks, etc.  Once those requirements have been met, the FFL will release the firearm to you.

Some FFL holders will allow the seller to ship the firearm to them directly, others will only receive from another FFL.  The law only requires that an FFL manage the transfer to you.  Generally, the FFL holder will charge a nominal fee of $20-$30 for the transfer.  If you are a really good customer of a gun store in your area, they might even waive the fee.  It doesn't hurt to ask.

If you were both residents of the same state, you could do a face to face transfer, but since it is 'interstate commerce' and involves transporting a firearm across state lines for the purpose of sale, you have to use the FFL transfer method.  In case you are tempted to forego the process, doing so is a federal firearms violation that carries a minimum penalty of 5 years...

It is a pain, but that is the way it works.

Hope this helps you out...
