Question about reliability

Question
Hi.
I own a Taurus PT111 Millemium Edition 9mm. A while back while at the shooting range, the gun would often just "click" and not actually fire until i pulled the trigger a few more times. I had this checked out by a gunsmith who informed me that there was a problem with the firing pin, and that he repaired it (or replaced a bracket holding it or something like that). It seemed to fire okay after that, but i havent been to the range much. My question is, i am concerned about the reliability of the gun now. In your opinion, once a gun has had a defect like that, do you think it can be repaired (like the gunsmith claims it has been) or it is possibly an unreliable firearm now. Basically, should i get rid of it and get another firearm? I bought it for the purpose of home protection, and would hate to be in a situation that required me to use it, and pull the trigger only to hear a clicking sound again.....or some other problem.
Also, are you familiar with that particular model? I may have some other questions. Thank you.

Answer
Michael,

I have some familiarity with the PT111, but as an operator only.  I do not know how the internal mechanism works.

People will buy Taurus autos (or Bersas or Makarovs) because they are cheap. I think, however, that if a gun is purchased as life insurance, cheap shouldn't be the major criterion.

There is frankly a reason why police agencies do not use the above mentioned guns. For purposes of self defense, I would recommend you go with a Glock, HK, SIG, or if on a budget, a Springfield XD.

Berettas and Rugers also will work reliably, although if you ever train with them or shoot with them in tactical competition, you'll see that they have decided disadvantages for reasons of manipulation, etc.

Whether your particular gun will work or not is really a question of how much you trust your gunsmith.  I can tell you that I would not trust MY safety to any Taurus auto (although I like their revolvers a great deal as far as revolvers go).
