Antique Double Rifle Inquiry

Question
Dear Mr. LeBlanc,  Thank you for taking the time to read this.  I was unable to send the pictures of this gun with this e-mail but would happily provide them to you if you would like.

Below is the e-mail trail of the research I have been conducting on this old weapon.  Due to its age I am having trouble finding any information about it.

No problem if you do not want to place a value on it.  I am more interested in finding out if there is any more information about the gun.

Thank you very much,

Dave

We don't have much to add to what you already know. We find listings of an Ulbrich in Dresden, about 1840, and an O. Ulbricht in Doebeln in Saxonia in about 1850.

Dresden is located in Saxonia, not in Bavaria. The history of the gunmakers in Dresden is quite interesting, but for now I only have it in German. The gunmakers from Suhl, the former German gunmaking center, produced their most eloborate guns for the Court in Dresden and some of them re-located there. It could well be that Suhl gunmakers were involved in the making of your gun.

The crown in the coat of arms indicates, that it was made for a Count, Baron or Earl. The number of tines in the crown indicate his pegging order.

You have a very nice gun, but I am no longer "in the loop" to advise on a current value. Perhaps I would insure it for $5,000.00.

Sincerely,
Dietrich Apel

Hello, I hope you are able to assist me.

I have two very old double rifles that belonged to my Grandfather. I am attempting to get an idea of their value for insurance purposes.

I have attatched some photos of one of them and hope that you can give me an idea of the value.

What I have been told so far follows:

Probably made in the 1880's
The name on top of the gun is G. Ulbricht
Made in Bavaria
Very strong, Jones underlever action with back action sidelocks with exposed hammers
There is a proof mark that I am unable to ID
The inscription on the top is Hofbuchsenmacher ( Gunsmith to the Court) - Dresden

The word "Dresden" is also on the side behind the hammer
The images that are engraved are a man hunting and a stag and doe on one side. The other side has 2 wild boars fighting and what appears to be 2 goats in a field.
I opened the gun discovered the number 627
I believe there was speculation that the caliber would compete with a British .450 and was similar to the Jeffries 404 nitro.

The stock has several nicks and scratches but is in otherwise good condition.

Answer
Hello Dave, Dave I am afraid that your gun is way out of
knowledge. From your description I would say you have a real
high class collectors piece, but I will dig around and if I find anything on it I will post it on the web site.Again I am sorry I can not be of some help.
