Shooting Modern Ammunition in a Vintage Forehand Arms Shotgun - Safety & Compatibility
Question
I have inherited a Forehand Arms Company Single barrel, break action shotgun. Has a patent stamp of February 4, 1898, serial number behind trigger guard and on barrel match. Barrel is stamped "Fine Decarbonized Steel" Not really concerned about value, main question is: Is it OK to shoot modern ammo in a gun this old?
Answer
Hi Doug,
Decarbonized steel barrels were originally designed to handle low pressure loads such as black powder. I recommend that you do not attempt to fire this gun using smokeless powder. I would just enjoy it for what it is and not risk firing it.
Thanks for the question Doug.
