Identifying a Vintage Springfield Model 15 Rifle - J. Stevens

Question
I have this rifle that once belonged to my grandfather. On the top of the barrel, in small print it says
       J. Stevens Arms Company
       Chicopee Falls Mass. USA
       22 short,long or long rifle
On either side in larger letters are the words
     SPRINGFIELD     MODEL 15
The patent no. is 2173576
The rifle is bolt action with a with a knob at the end of the bolt that is pulled back to set the firing pin. The gun has a fixed front sight and an adjustable rear site.It is in OK condition with some blemishes and scratches on the stock. Can you tell me the history and possible approximate value of this piece.
Thanks
Gene

Answer
Hello Gene,

To most completely answer your question a bit of company history is in order.

The Stevens, J. Arms. Co. of Chicopee Falls, Mass. began operation in 1864. In 1888 it was incorporated as the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. It operated under this name until 1920 when it was taken over by the Savage Arms Co. It has operated as an independent division of same since.

Over the years many (over  two dozen) 22.caliber bolt action rifles were manufactured by J.Stevens. Most were inexpensive rifles in both single shot and repeaters. Most of these rifles have similar values including the model 15 which in good condition has a retail value of around $100.

Thank you for the question Gene.
