30 Carbine barrel

Question
I have an M1 carbine barrel that has a cracked gas chamber. What I want to know is whether this can be repaired or is just a junk barrel. If it can be repaired by welding I can do the machine work myself since I have been a machinist/toolmaker for 30+ years. If it can be repaired I need to know if you can tell me the thread size for the piston nut. Any help you can give me is appreciated. P.S. the crack is along the bottom of the chamber. Thanks

Answer
Hi Mark,

For a variety of reasons I'd be very reluctant to attempt a repair and still feel comfortable with subsequent usage. I'm sure that if you ask around you can find an opposing opinion. However, you have ask for mine and I tend to error on the conservative/cautious side.

I do not have access to the specs for the thread size for the piston nut but if you want to go that route I'm sure you'll be able to find that info relatively easily.

Thanks for the question.
