Remington 700 and ammunition

Question
I have decided I want to buy a remington 700 but I am not sure as to which. The size is what I am having trouble with. Should I get a .223 .300 30.06 or 30.30. By the way I am not any sort of expert. Any help on what size would be great. The use would be for small varmint and deer season.
Thanks in advance

Answer
Reed,

My first choice would be to suggest that you cover yourself with the acquisition of two rifles. Each chosen for a specific purpose. My opinion and advise would be more specific concerning each individual rifle/cartridge at that point.

However, I fully unerstand that this is not always possible and of course, does not address your question directly. It is however something for you to keep in mind. You no doubt will eventually (we all have) want to purchase another rifle anyway. Trust me on that one !

Good cartridges for combination deer/varmit include .25-06.
.257 Roberts, .25 WSSM, .250 Savage, .240 Weatherby Mag.,
.243 WSSM, 243 Win., and 6mm. Remington.

If I were selecting one of the above for myself for deer/varmit, my first choice would be the .25-06. It is a .30-06. case necked down to accept a .25 cal. bullet.

My second choice would be a .243 Win. which is a .308 case necked down. You can obtain load/bullet combo's all the way down to 55 grn. for varmit and also bullets/loads heavy enough for Whitetail deer.

Keep in mind that there are many other variables to consider. IE. Bullet placement, terrain, shooting distance, and the possibility of hunting game larger than a Whitetail at some point in the future.

Which ever rifle/caliber that you choose, practice, practice and then practice some more. You want to be both comfortable and confident that you (and your rifle) are capable of the shot before every taking same on a game animal. This of course is another topic for another time.

Thank you for your question and good luck !
