going backwards

Question
Dear Pat,
I'm a beginner, and I'd like to know how to go backwards on skates. I figured it out just by screwing around, but I know it's not the correct technique.

Answer
Hi Carson,
The easiest way to start going backward is to turn your toes inward, towards each other....bend your knees and take small marching steps, picking your skates straight up and down.  Give your self a rhythm of step, step, step, step, etc.  The pressure should be to the inside of each skate towards the ball of the foot.

This will get you going.  If you stop rolling it's because you've stopped turning your toes inward.  You need them turned in for traction.

Once your comfortable with this then slow your pushes down and start to glide on 1 foot a little longer.

It's as easy at that.  Just remember to keep your chin up and your eye level up.  Don't look at your feet and you'll do fine.

If I can help with anything else, feel free to write me again.

   Good Luck
         Pat
