Skiing Apparel for March

Question
Hi Cynthia,
I am traveling to Ascutney Mountain in Vermont this weekend.  I have never been skiing in the month of March before, and I am un-sure of how warmly to dress.  I checked the weather report and it said a high of around 37 degrees and a low of around 15 degrees.  Also, I do not own any ski pants and unfortunately, I'm on a very tight budget right now so I don't plan on buying them.  I was going to wear long underwear, jeans, and warm-up pants over them.  Will this work?  Thanks SO MUCH for your help!
Sincerely,
Jaime

Answer
Dear Jaime -

Since you are spring skiing, you are skiing when the weather is most changeable.  Your idea of dressing in layers is perfect for that time of year.  However, jeans are not a good idea.  Almost any type of active wear is better than jeans which are not very forgiving when you need to bend, get wet easily, and take forever to dry.  I recommend long underwear of polypropylene or fleece, sweat or warm-up pants, and a water-proof or water-resistant outer layer (like running pants, wind pants, or rain pants).  If you do not have a water-resistant set of pants, bring multiple changes of clothes.  When you get wet (and therefor, cold) you can change, take a break, and then head out on the hill ready to face the weather.

Since you are spring skiing, the weather can be warm and sunny one minute and snowing the next.  Please bring sufficient clothing with you to the hill in sunny weather, so you can make it back to the lodge safely and warmly if a sudden storm comes in.  Also bring sun screen for your face.  You can get a bad sunburn in cold sunny weather, but it is also a great time to ski.

Best of luck to you!  Let me know if you have further questions.
