How to brake with Roller Skates Quad

Question
-------------------------
I would love a few private lessons. I live on 66th and West End. I am not available Sats so I cannot go to the outdoor classes.  How much is a private?  If we can do it at around 5:30 PM on a weekday that would be great. I grew up on the old fashioned skates with a key that I wore around my neck and I thought I could just get on these and go - but they are so slippery and I am no longer a young kid in the Bronx.  Where is your mom from?  Who knows - we could be related!  Jerilyn Rubin

Question -
I am a 54-year old woman.  I was roller blading for a while but never got very comfortable with it.  So I decided to buy a pair of roller skates. I have a very good pair of Riedell roller skates and the brake is in the front.  I am not sure exactly how to brake.  Can you give me some guidelines as once I can do that I will be ready to roll.  Thank you so much. Jerilyn
P.S. Do you teach roller skating in NYC?
P.P.S you can post this on the message boards if you want.
Answer -
Jerilyn,
First of all I do teach in NYC (Lezly Skate  School - since 1979). I have indoor & outdoor classes - you can visit my site:  www.SkateGuru.com  it will give you all the info on the school, or you can call me at 212 777-3232 - or do both.
By the  way - my mothers naiden name was Rubin.
To stop using the toe stop: While rolling fwd. bring your feet parallel about 2" apart, knees deeply bent, arms extended to the side & slightly fwd. (a diagonal) hands at waist level, palms facing down & pressing down. With all your weight on your left foot, roll fwd.so far past the right foot that the heel of the right foot comes off the ground engaging the toe stop, gently at first, then adding pressure as you coast to a stop. You must be solidly balanced over the front foot with your knees deeply bent through the whole stopping action. There are better, more secure stops that I will teach you if you decide to come to the school. My indoor class is at the Roxy on W. 18th St.& my outdoor class at Mercer Playground & Central Park. May classes begin May 4th at the Roxy & on the 7th at Mercer Playground. Call to register it will change your life. Hope to work with you in the near future. Roll on!..........
