Am switching from straight to shaped skis, Any advice on
how to transition and what major difference in technique should be for turning?

hello and thanks for the question..

welcome to the shaped ski - you'll wonder why it took so long to convert!!

the big difference is that you'll find them easier to turn - using more force and edges than pivoting of the foot.

best way to get the hang of them is to do longer turns and concentrate on putting more pressure on the ski as you try and angle your knee toward the uphill ski.
...think about trying to point your downhill knee at your uphill toe...

you'll also have to widen your stance - about a soccer ball width apart.

you'll find that the learning curve will be easier if you can go for a lesson - let the instructor know you have just switched over and are looking for tips ... they can help you out.

i now find it difficult remembering how to teach clients when they show up on straight skis - gives me a good mental workout.

to give you some idea - the instructor teaching manuals worldwide were re-written when shaped skis took over... there is that much difference.

but that said - they use about 30% less energy to turn - so the days on skis are actually more enjoyable [as long as you stand centred on the ski that is]
