What gear?

2016/7/22 14:37:52

Question
Hello,
years ago I have tried windsurfing using my uncle's VERY old board.
Right now I think it is time for me to start windsurfing, and I would appreciate some advice on how to choose gear, as I really have no clue.
First of all I know to stay away from old stuff, but still will try to purchase a used outfit for lower cost reasons. I am 6' and 220lbs. I live in Milwaukee, WI and lake Michigan is just short walk from my house. The winds are not super consistent in speed, but most of the time we get around 15mph winds, sometimes much more.
What size of board do I need? What liters? What size of sail? Should I get more than one sail?
All advice would be much appreciated, as right now I know nothing.
Thank you!

Answer
First of all, is there a windsurfing shop near you?  If so go there and talk to them.  They will know the best locations to learn and the best equipment to learn on in that location.  To answer your question: Board size for a beginner at your weight should be around 200 to 230 liters with a center board type design.  You will need a small sail to learn with so I would recommend a 4.5 sq. meter sail and eventually you will want a larger sail around 6 to 7 meters once you get comfortable on the smaller sail. Definitely stay away from boards that are more than 10 years old.  It is quite difficult to find out how old a board actually is but if you cannot find the board maker on the web to look it up on their archives, the board is probably too old. You can use an older sail but I would recommend nothing older than 15 years for design. If the sail looks worn or has tears, walk away. Good luck and good wind!
