learning to sail

Question
Hi Patrick,

This site is fantastic! The answers to previous questions have been really
insightful. I have a similar story - looking to buy my first board after a couple
of mornings of lessons on a big 170L. I have been uphauling and getting
towards good tacking but still learning. I weigh 110 (55kg) and will be sailing
in flat to slightly choppy conditions in lighter winds to start. What sort of
volume board am i looking for? I have a couple of small sails that have been
given to me by a mate.

Thanks,

Sarah

Answer
I would say the best size for weight for your first board should be around 125 liters.  You should be able to uphaul it easily although it will be a lot more tippy than the 170 but you will grow into it in no time and you will always use it as your light wind board.  You should be able to sail it in winds up to about 15 to 18 MPH with smaller sails.  Your big sail should be in the neighborhood of 6 meters.  The Sailworks Retro is a great sail in this size for you.  Easy to rig with plenty of power in the low and high range.   Once you get proficient water starting you can move down in volume to a high wind board. Good Wind!!!
