windsurfing mast

Question
I bought a used windsurfer. Rigging it up...the mast appears to be to short for the two sails that came with.
Each sail has an adjustment at the mast head, but after placing the mast base on the universal joint...there is no room at all for the downhaul. The sail from top to bottom is too long.

Answer
Sounds like you need a mast extention. The question is, what type will work for you? If the board has a specific mast to board attachment, then you can replace your current extention (the too short one) with a longer adjustable extention. You should be able to remove your short extention and bolt a new one right on.

If you have a mast to board connection that is just a bolt with a nut, where the nut slides into a slot and you tighten the mast base, then you can buy a complete extention system. Chinook is a very popular brand of mast bases that are very universal and work for standard diameter masts.

Just plug windsurfing mast bases into a search engine, or if you have a local shop nearby, just take your mast base in and they can fix you up.

Let me know if you have any questions. If you tell me the make of board and describe the mast to board connection, I can probably tell you how to proceed.

Keep on sailing,
Windlover
