Choosing the Right Board Size: A Guide for Your Weight and Skill

Question
Dear Patrick,

I way about 170 lbs and am about 6 ft tall.  I do not know much about board size and volume.  I have been learning on an older bic board that is very long and has a large volume and it is nice for rope starts. I am looking at a minstral echo board that is 135 liters.  I was wondering if this board will be too small?

Thanks!
Kyle

Answer
It's a tad on the small size for your weight. Assuming you are just beginning I would opt for around 150 to 165 liters.  You will be able to plan on this and also uphaul it.  Once you decide to sail in stronger winds and buy a smaller board (if ever) this can become your low to medium wind board.  Best way to really find out is if you can take it for a test ride in your normal wind and water conditions. I sail with a friend who is and advanced windsurfer about your size and he uses a 125 liter most of the time.
