Tips on walking with a stick

Question
Hi, i would be grateful if you could help. My mum uses a stick and finds her shoulder suffers as a result. I was wondering if you knew of any key points to look at when measuring up, the best way to walk with one and any other bits of advice you could offer please?

Answer
Lynne:
While I have never used sticks or poles for walking, I can think of several things that might help. The weight of the pole would be important as extra weight could contribute to shoulder problems. Perhaps a lightweight ski-type pole would be appropriate. As for length, I would say to experiment with different lengths until you find one that accommodates her natural posture. She should also try to avoid putting too much of her body weight onto the stick during her stride -- just use it for a light support.

In summary, something lightweight, easy to swing through the stride and used for short, light touches on the ground should improve the shoulder pain.

I hope this is helpful.
