cleaning rust from bike rims

Question
Hi Graeme::

I have some really rusty rims on an old Schwinn.  I was wondering if there was an easy way of getting the rust off?

Answer
Norm,

On steel rims, I don't know of a better way than steel wool.  You will have to gently rub the rims with the steel wool until the rust is not visible.  If there is a chrome surface, try not to rub so hard that you start to remove the chrome, because that is what helps the steel resist rust.  Although you might think to further prevent rust with a coating of oil or grease, don't: the brakes will pick up anything you coat the surface with and make it hard to slow the bike.

For better function in the future, think about having a bike shop re-rim the wheels with aluminum, which are lighter and rust-proof.  Aluminum rims are lighter, not too expensive, and rust-free.

If you need to know more, just ask.

Graeme
