bike behind car

Question
Hello,

About 35 years ago I watched a race on European TV where a bicycle rider was racing behind a car at around 200km/h.  The car had a board on its back to remove the air resistance from the bike rider to allow the high speed.  The track was oval (indoors I think) and the outside of the track was much higher than the inside.

Do you know what this sport is called?  Are there any videos of it on youtube?

Thanks!!

Answer
Hello David,

So far I know it is not an UCI official sport, but it is called simply speedriding.
I think you've seen Fred Rompelberg (who's now having a sportfacility at Mallorca/Spain).
You ride on a heavy and long bike (aerodynamic)in the slipstream of a vehicle and after a certain time they measure the speed. Mostly near or on a saltlake in the USA.
The discipline on a oval, is trackbiking. Sometimes on a 250/400 mtr track, but never saw this
with ridin back on a car.

Fastest Bicycle: Fred Rompelberg Custom Bike
On October 3rd, 1995, Fred Rompelberg rode his double-geared, custom-designed bike behind a motor dragster and used its slipstream to draft his way to 167 mph, the fastest speed ever on a bicycle. At that speed, he could easily outrun most police helicopters. Not that he'd be able to lose them -- the Bonneville Salt Flats, where Rompelberg set his record, stretch for over 150 square miles.

It is a extreme sport!
