cool weather cycling

Question
This might seem like a silly question, but I'm not sure exactly what I should wear to bike in cooler (50s & low 60s) temperatures.  In the past, I've done most of my biking in the warmer weather, when all you need is a t-shirt or s/s cycling jersey and a pair of biking shorts.  But what should I wear to keep warm when I'm out biking in the cooler Fall temps, but not get all sweaty from overdressing?  Are there any advantages to wearing cycling specific pants, for example, over a pair of sweatpants?  BTW, I don't particularly like the long tights that men & women usually wear in cooler weather, and don't see myself wearing those.

Answer
The key to cold weather cycling wear is breathable layers. The idea is that you want to wick the moisture (sweat) away from your body. So you want to wear some sort of wicking base layer, top and bottom.
