Hybrid bikes

Question
Michael, I was visiting Boston recently and saw a tandem bicycle only for a few seconds but still can't believe what is was.  There was a rider on the back but the rider in front / middle was seated and peddling at what looked like a 90 degree angle to the bike.  My friend saw it too, but others around us didn't think it was a big deal.  Is there such a bike, or were we seeing things?  Thanks!

Answer
Hello Paul,

I'm not that familiar with the tandemscene, but there are riding a lot of different models. The tandem which mostly is used is the one whereby two persons are seated behind eachother like on a normal bike.
But there are models where one of them is look/riding' the the opposite direction.
These are more circusmodels than you may assume unlike the traditional type's whereby you may can ride races.

If you have other question, I'd like to hear later from you.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Michael
