Paint

Question
QUESTION: I own an 1972 Starcraft with gelcoat and want to paint the inside and outside. Before painting over the gelcoat on the inside, should I sand then primer then paint or what would be the best way to paint over the gelcoat?

ANSWER: Hi Steve....Thank for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question.

First of all, a fine, light sanding will create a surface for the new gelcoat application to adhere. But first, repair any damages such as chips, gouges, and crazings, then re-gel. Depending upon the extent and severity of repairs, a primer may be necessary.

QUESTION: Since the original finish is gelcoated I am assuming to paint over the gelcoat I need to gelcoat again or can I use an automotive paint to go over the gelcoat?

Answer
Steve, in order to obtain a proper and ecologically friendly finnish, automotive paint is a no-no. There are a few excellent paints available which provide a better and longer lasting finnish than gelcoat, and I recommend you consult a few marine repair/refinnishing facilities to obtain their opinions, then you can make an informed decision. Frankly, I'm not up to speed on what is currently being used, so you'll have to do some homework first.
